Thomas Dyja's recent book, The Third Coast: When Chicago Built the American Dream, is nothing short of a fine ensemble of intertwined Chicago stories that many of us are familiar with but at face value seem disconnected.

So if most of the stories are renowned (yawn), why read the book?

If you think you want a more connected and expansive view of Chicago, its blues, jazz, arts, politics, politicians, architects, architecture, urban renewal, racism, writers, makers, breakers, innovations and innovators (McDonald's, the Sears Roebuck catalog and Playboy) you'll want to get a copy. Dyja, like a blue collar working stiff, has done all the hard work. Interlocking incalculable pieces of Chicago’s past and present, he has created an absolutely remarkable overview written with no holds barred.

As if tossed into the back seat of an old fashioned jalopy cab with a driver who sounds like he's been out all night, Dyja is our Chicago history tour guide, as decades of events and people's lives wiz by on a white knuckle ride. Screeching only to slow down, but never stopping, Dyja drives you into people’s lives, their living rooms, office spaces, public buildings and bedrooms. As a reader, you bear witness to the notables and the notorious, and one can visualize their intimate thoughts, motivations, hopes and dreams. This book is no rehash; it’s the Pulp Fiction of Chicago tales, and Dyja drives you into the heart of Chicago.

This book, like any good book, left me feeling grateful. Grateful for all those who have, by fate and foible, been oddly intertwined in creating Chicago. I’m grateful to Dyja for his big shoulders, and this book should be required reading to anyone who gives a rat’s ass about Chicago, past, present and future.

There is a mention of Vivian Maier, and her self-portrait is honorably displayed on the same page as Hugh Hephner (Playboy) and Ray Kroc (McDonald’s). Even if Maier had not been included, The Third Coast: When Chicago Built the American Dream, my love for the book would not be diminished one iota.

100 Vivian Maier photographic prints will be exhibited for the 8th Biennale dell'Immagine (Photography Biennial Bi8, www.consarc.ch) in Chiasso, Switzerland (10 minutes drive from Como, 40 from Milan - Italy, 20 from Lugano, Switzerland). This is the first European event to host a large number of prints from the Jeffrey Goldstein Collection. Vivian Maier's prints will be featured in the bright space of the Spazio Officina in collaboration with the work of other contemporary women photographers including Anne Leader, Stefania Beretta, Piritta Martikainen, Nicole Hametner, Claire Laude, Anne Golaz, and videos by Giusi Campisi and Sara Rossi. About the exhibition:
Collateral Damage: The Human Face of War is both a show of art works and a cry for help. And while the photographs have been taken by talented and dedicated photographers (Samanta Appleton, Vincent Cianni, Ashley Gilbertson and Stephanie Sinclair) many of the images explore the human heart of darkness in compelling but often difficult to view images. However, it is crucial that these works be seen; they need to be present and available, as an aid to our knowledge and understanding of the longest military conflict in the history of the United States. The recurrent remarks of returning veterans of late, include their disbelief at just how invisible the sense of war is back home, no longer newsworthy. Yet far too many of these young men and women who served this country in the armed forces, are returning to the United States with their lives completely shattered. They are coming home to an official system that underserves because it is overwhelmed. They are coming to a society that doesn't want to hear about the war. They are coming home unable to find work. They are coming home missing limbs. They are coming home psychically damaged - suffering from various forms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and battling depression, paranoia, drug addiction, insomnia, broken marriage and lure of suicide.

The photographs range from $1500-$5000. One-half of the sale price would be tax-deductible and donated directly by you to either Wounded Warriors or the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. The other half will go directly to the photoraphers, who are in serious need of financial support. The Stephen Daiter Gallery will take nothing of any proceeds from sales from this exhibition. It is that time of year again!...I clean myself up and try to run through all five of the NYC boroughs. This is an amazing event and it is one of my favorite things about this city.

The great thing about the NYC marathon is that NY Road Runners requires many runners to raise money for various different charities as part of their entry. Over the years, millions of dollars have been raised by athletes or... people like me.

This year I am raising money for the Brain Tumor Foundation in honor of a really good friend of mine who passed away a few years ago. The Brain Tumor Foundation is working very effectively to heighten awareness of brain cancer as well as inform family and friends of its impact.

A Trip to China - Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows

Art for me is a multi-faceted transporter. From the artist’s perspective, it's the places where we work, be it studio or street, local or abroad. For the advocate, art transports us to the places of exploration in the process of art making. Additionally for the exhibition goer, art serves as the transporter in getting us to where the show is held along with the experience the artwork gives us while viewing it. Furthermore, art-related travels often become enhanced by those we meet along the way.

In the spirit of art-related travels, I've just returned from China accompanying Michael Williams for a press check of the upcoming book, Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows (by Richard Cahan and Michael Williams of CityFiles Press). The book is scheduled to be released this September. For those who don’t know, a press check is a critical and sometimes grueling part of the printing process especially for a photography book. It takes place on-site (in our case Nansha) and is an important proofing step for the main purpose of achieving the expectations you want regarding the photographic images, tonality being among other important details.

We worked for 4 days in a factory in Nansha (near Hong Kong) in a building with 1,000 workers. The workers we met were not only professional, serious, and hardworking but warm, curious, and fun! Additionally, it was an amazing experience for me to witness first hand Michael Williams at work with his Chicago work ethic, hammering out requests, and examining the details to the very last of the book's near 300 images.

In summary, the press check went as well as we could have hoped for, and I am thoroughly excited for the the September book release of Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows. Overall regarding the book, I have always felt that it was best to go with Chicago-based authors who are good on their feet, good on the streets and good with understanding photography. Like a pair of old fashioned Chicago newspaper snoops, Michael and Richard captured the Chicago-side of this Chicago artist.

The only slight problem I ran into was at an immigration check point where a guard pointed to the "soul patch" facial hair shown on my passport photo and then pointed to my cleanly shaved face and demanded, "Where is it?" More interestingly, I had a pre-arranged meeting in Hong Kong with a photo gallery owner from Shanghai. Sven, the gallery owner, being German and measuring in at around 6 foot 8 inches was not only easy to spot but was an extremely delightful person who has been following the Vivian Maier story half way around the world with great enthusiasm. More transported experiences thanks to Vivian!

I can’t give away the book's surprises or even guarantee how one will think of Vivian Maier after reading it. I can say from my own point of view, her work strikes me as a celebration of the anonymity most of us live in. Maier’s work causes me to lift my eyes or in some cases lower them. All the while, forcing me to view the world with wider eyes.

Photography Feature: Maggie Diaz

Vivian Maier’s work has connected kindred spirits all over the globe. More than a year ago, I received a letter from a curator named Gwendolen DeLacy from Melbourne, Australia. Gwen manages the photography collection of a woman named Maggie Diaz, referred to by many as a prodigal daughter of Chicago photography. Known in the 50s as Maggie Besson, she walked the same Chicago neighborhoods as Vivian Maier – often carrying the same camera. Like Maier, she walked on both sides of the street – never intimidated by anyone. Although Maggie had spent time as a domestic help, she wasn’t much good at it, but was lucky enough to stumble into work as a Girl Friday in an ad agency in the early 50s and soon became a commercial photographer. Diaz recorded the development of the Lower North Center project (later known as Cabrini Green) and was resident photographer at The Tavern Club on Michigan Avenue. In her spare time, she walked the back streets recording the secret lives of children. In 1961 she accepted a one-way ticket to Australia as a divorce gift from her Australian husband. She was never to be seen in Chicago again.

The State Library of Victoria (in Melbourne) has acquired her archive from the past 50 years, and her works are now held in the National Gallery of Australia. Something else she has in common with Maier – most of her collection was never printed...until now.

Maggie has not lost any of her Chicago sparkle and at 87 years young, she’s still going. Hopefully one of these days she’ll make it back to Chicago for a visit. A Message of Hope through Photography

To say Vivian Maier's reach is far flung is an understatement. Ironically, for someone who seemed to prefer obscurity, her photographic legacy has developed a large global following embraced by all walks of life, both photographers and non-photographers alike.

In the spirit of the holidays we would like to give a special “shout out” to our buddy SSgt. Patrick Kavanaugh better known as "Kav" who is currently stationed abroad. Kav is a photographer as well as a Marine, and his photographs can be viewed at: kavanaughmp.smugmug.com

Kav is a great example of what a good and growing artist/photographer does, keeping his nose to the grindstone regardless of the circumstances. For arduous circumstances in the right hands can serve as a spring board elevating both the artist and viewer.

As odd as it may sound, I think this is very much a holiday image. It serves as a reminder to those of us comfortably going about our routines that others elsewhere are facing more challenging situations while simultaneously serving others. In a tight package, the image portrays an ironic balance of creativity and destruction. Kav, the central fulcrum of the teeter-totter, balances out the machine gun on one side with the Graflex Speed Graphic camera on the other. Both devices made to shoot, and both very powerful. Let's hope the camera wins.

To Kav and all his brothers and sisters serving, to those that have lost life and/or limbs, and to the families of those serving; we express our incredible and deepest appreciation.

For all, we, the Vivian Maier team in its entirety, wish you the best for your holiday season and well into the new year. We are thankful for all those who have extended themselves toward the project, and kind thoughts are sent to all artists and their supporters, past, present and future.

Like the camera in Kav's photo, Vivian Maier captures our hearts and minds. The camera, "art" and Vivian Maier all leave us with a sense of hope.
